Clearcut near study area. Dead trees are supposed to be left by the forest owner to be used by wood peckers. However, few such trees are left. I have seen several trees killed by bark beetles that were not discovered by the forest owner for at least 2 years and then they were cut down, undoubtedly resulting in a reduction in biodiversity. Red wood ants that build meter high mounds are seen to no longer live in the clearcuts, only surviving along the edges and inside adjoining forests.
