Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Myrmica queen and dead Lasius ant on her leg, Torsby, Sweden. Many ants try to catch and kill queens of other species as well as their own (if they are not from their nest). This queen was still searching for a place to start a colony after recently mating. However, a Lasius spp. of ant attacked her and clamped onto her leg like a bull dog. She aparently had killed the worker ant but as yet was not able to rid herself as the ant would not let go even in death. It is hard to say if this hindrance will eventually spell her demise as she will be incumbered when digging.
