RESEARCH:
Research: Silviculture, mainly in two fields:
1. Silviculture (regeneration and stand treatment) of hardwoods sucah as beech
and oak. At the experimental forest in Skarhult, 10 km east Eslv, we have
regeneration experiments with beech and oak. Also a large study of
regeneration of beech at Ryssberget (close to Slvesborg). We also have a
thinning experiment with oak in Skarhult.
2. Silviculture and wood properties (Scots Pine and Norway Spruce in southern
Sweden). The wood properties and the quality of timber differ depending on,
among other things, silviculture operations. We work mainly with regeneration
and have one large experiment with regeneration methods (pine; planting,
sowing, natural regeneration and natural regeneration over long periods with
shelter trees) 40 km east of Vxj. We also study thinning and wood quality of
pine and spruce.

EDUCATION:
M.S. (Fil. Mag.) in biology (Animal Ecology), Lund University, Sweden, 1995.
Additional courses in chemistry.
DUTIES:
PhD-student since February 1995.
RESEARCH:
Within the field of chemical communication, I'm working with the codling moth,
a world wide orchard pest, and sexual pheromones. The title of my project is
"Improved biological control of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella, by
pheromone and volatile host-plant attractants".
The female codling moth releases a substance called codlemone (a
pheromone) to attract males. This substance can be produced synthetically, and
used for plant protection with a method called "mating disruption".
Synthetic codlemone is then spread over the orchard to prevent the males from
finding the females. However, mating disruption is not always reliable,
especially not at high population densities. If the pheromone is combined with
a repellant compound, the control can be improved.
I also plan to study the interaction between Cydia species and volatile
compounds emitted from their host plants.
TEACHING:
I have so far no teaching experience at university level, but I'm willing to
give single lectures in introductory or animal ecology or participate in group
discussions. I would also like to present my project and its role in plant
protection, to give students an overview of our division, or talk to students
considering their exam projects.
Please do not hesitate to contact or visit me!

M.S., Entomology, Colo. State University, Ft. Collins, Colorado, USA.
Ph.D., Entomology, Univ. of California, Berkeley, California, USA.
Docent, Ecology, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.
DUTIES:
Full-time research and guest lecturer. Present organizer of seminar series
with the Chemical Ecology group (Prof. Jan Lfqvist). Web master of our
group's world wide web pages (see above). Regular reviewer of about 10
international journals, especially J. Chem. Ecol., Anim. Behav., J. Insect
Physiol., Can. Entomol., and J. Appl. Ecol.
RESEARCH:
Chemical ecology and behavior of bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae),
including Ips typographus and Pityogenes chalcographus attacking Norway
spruce, and Tomicus piniperda attacking Scots pine. Thanasimus formicarius
(Coleoptera: Cleridae), a predator of bark beetles, and Acanthocinus aedulis
(Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) a long-horned beetle competitor are also studied.
The research involves laboratory experiments of bark beetle orientation
behavior toward pheromones and semiochemicals, isolation and identification of
such chemicals, and general behavior concerning attack of the tree and
interactions of individuals. The goal is to discover and use semiochemicals in
biocontrol of bark beetles by luring them to traps, repelling them from trees,
or confusing their host-finding attempts. Extensive field experiments are done
each year in Vrmland on the responses of bark beetles to attractive and
repellent semiochemicals and host odors as well as on general behavior
regarding emergence, flight dispersal, and colonization of host trees. During
cool, rainy periods of field work, I have studied red wood ants (Formica
aquilonia) regarding foraging, trail-making, nest temperatures and
silvicultural practices. I am also interested in insect sounds and swarming of
midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). In many of the studies, I have made models
to simulate observed behavior of insect populations under various ecological
conditions.
TEACHING:
Previously have taught the course: "Simulation of ecological models by
personal computer" - 1992, 1994 (Lund Univ.). Other subjects in entomology
where I could give a lecture are: Mechanisms of insect orientation to odors;
Resistance of plants to insects; Bark beetle biology; Biosynthesis of bark
beetle pheromones; Insect behavior. In the areas of chemical ecology: Field
methods in chemical ecology, Isolation of semiochemicals, Chemical ecology of
bark beetles.
In Ecology and Ecological Simulations: Spatial analysis, Computer simulation,
Plant and Animal Coevolution, Competition, Speciation and genetic models,
Mating systems and mate-finding, host-finding. In the areas of Data Analysis,
reference research, writing manuscripts: BIOSIS searches and reference
management; Writing scientific papers in English. A few other areas include,
Electronic devices and instrumentation in ecological research; Environmental
physiology. Ideas for courses: Simulation of ecological models by personal
computer; Insect Behavior; Insect Ecology or (Insect Behavior and Ecology);
Chemical Ecology. I am willing to teach a 2 point course in any of the "Ideas
for courses" above (8 lectures-discussion, reading homework). Or I can give a
lecture or two (or lead discussion) on any of the above topics or related
areas.

MSc in Horticulture
DUTIES:
At the moment I am a research student specializing in recycling of plant
nutrients by composting and plant response to different composts. I designed a
laboratory equipment and a standard substrate for laboratory studies of
microbial transformation of organic materials.
RESEARCH:
Synthesis of my experience is presented as the following idea: To achieve
efficient waste handling I see possibilities for using new technology (hi-tech
and eco-tech in combination) in this area of human activity. By modernization
of biological transformation methods, organic solids and liquid wastes from
households can be utilized as a raw material. Kitchen and garden wastes, paper
and different packagings together with human excreta (without addition of
water) can be mixed and converted by microorganisms to valuable products. The
system will start with efficient collection of each kind of waste and its
preprocessing. Processing will include, among other features, aeration,
agitation, temperature and odor control. Both biogas and biofertilizers will
be produced which means that waste will be upgraded, energy will be saved and
plant nutrients recycled. Biogas can be used as fuel in busses and cars or for
production of electricity and heat. Biofertilizers can be adjusted to the
requirements of various cultivated crops. This system I named G&G system. It
can be used for microbial transformation of all organic
materials which originate from the plant and animal kingdom. G&G system can be
modified to local requirements. Not only organic waste and residue can be
treated but also fuel crops can be transformed to renewable energy and
valuable biofertilizers instead of burning biomass for receiving different
forms of energy (electricity or heat) and degrading organic compounds to ash.

EDUCATION:
Fil. kand., University of Lund
Ph. D., Dept Systematic Botany, University of Lund
Docent, Horticultural Plant Breeding, SLU
DUTIES:
Director of the apple and pear breeding program at Balsgrd, aimed towards the
production of new and better adapted fruit tree cultivars. Supervising several
Ph.D. students. Reviewer of international journals, especially for Molecular
Ecology since I am on their editorial board. Responsible for a major part of
the educational programs at Balsgrd.
RESEARCH:
I have been involved in several research projects on apple and pear breeding,
with special reference to resistance towards fungal diseases. However, I also
work with characterization of genetic diversity in some horticultural crops.
Methods used are mainly biometrics of morphological traits, and DNA-based
markers, especially (1) "classical DNA fingerprinting" based on RFLP
methodology and the hybridization of restriction enzyme-digested DNA samples
to hypervariable mini- or microsatellite probes; and (2) PCR-based RAPDs. The
plant material consists mainly of crops which are at a relatively early stage
of the domestication process; e.g. dogroses (Rosa sect. Caninae, hawthorn
(Crataegus spp.), Japanese quince (Chaenomeles japonica), sea bucktorn
(Hippophae rhamnoides) and lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea). Here, the
availability of adequate levels of genetic diversity is an important
prerequisite for future plant breeding programs. In cooperation with the
Department for Landscape Planning, SLU, we have also started to collect and
analyze material of the garden plant Lilium martagon. Another ongoing project
is the analysis of genetic variation and heritability in two genera with
reduced genetic recombination; the heterogamic species in Rosa sect. Caninae
and the apomicts in Rubus subgen. Rubus.
TEACHING:
Have taken part in the basic pedagogical course at SLU as well as the "docent
course". Have taught systematic botany and related subjects at undergraduate
levels at the University of Lund, and some plant breeding at the "hortonom
program" at SLU. Have developed and taught several postgraduate courses in (1)
application of computer programs in statistics, (2) DNA fingerprinting, and
(3) oral and written presentation of research results.
Up till now, Balsgrd has taken part in undergraduate education at SLU
only to a minor extent. We have, however, possibilities and competence to
teach a number of subjects related to horticulture as well as more general
biology programs (e.g. cultivation and plant breeding of horticultural crops,
characterization of plant genetic resources including DNA-based markers, plant
secondary metabolites including pharmacognosy). I would thus like to develop
and teach several undergraduate and postgraduate courses, e.g. in cooperation
with departments at Alnarp, Lund University and Denmark (rslev).

DUTIES:
Guest researcher.
RESEARCH:
My research interests have been the biochemical and physiological events of
flowering in fruit trees, particularly concerning the roles of endogenous
hormones, polyamines, carbohydrates and proteins in flower-bud formation in
relation to the vegetative growth. Also of interest is stress physiology which
focuses on the influence of water stress on endogenous hormones and stress
proteins in relation to growth and development of plants. Recent emphasis is
being given to studies on mutual effects (including allocation of mass and the
distribution of assimilates in different parts of plants) of rootstocks and
scions in apple trees at steady-state nutrition under the conditions of free
access to all nutrients and nutrient stress.
